We’re proud to be supporting climate action projects that not only offset your emissions but also bring about positive economic and social benefits. The savanna fire management projects in Arnhem Land are bringing positive outcomes for Aboriginal communities and the environment, through strategic fire management.

Supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander economic development is a direct commitment of EnergyAustralia’s Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP).

Out of the ashes

Bushfires that sweep Australia can burn uncontrollably for weeks at a time. Aside from having potentially devastating impacts on local communities and wildlife, these fires produce massive amounts of carbon dioxide (the principal atmospheric contributor to climate change), significantly increasing Australia’s annual emissions.

Aboriginal people traditionally used fire to help maintain and protect Country. This long-established practice is now being revived in Arnhem Land in the Northern Territory. This practice reduces carbon dioxide emissions released by wildfires and also enables employment opportunities for local Aboriginal people.

Timeless knowledge meets modern technology

The Arnhem Land Fire Abatement (ALFA) projects, operated by Aboriginal rangers and Traditional Landowners, reinstate long-established early dry season burning practices. The projects combine traditional knowledge with cutting edge technology to reduce the environmental impact of uncontrolled wildfires, over more than 80,000 km2 in Arnhem Land.

An easy way to help the environment

As part of our carbon neutral program, Go Neutral, EnergyAustralia buys offset units from this Federal Government-approved project. These credits help offset the carbon emissions associated with our customers’ home energy use.

Eligible customers can opt in to the carbon neutral program, at no extra cost to them.
